2017 NFL First Round Mock Draft Predictions
1. Cleveland Browns – Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
Garrett is without question the best prospect in this class. He’s a game-changing pass rusher, and with no sure things at quarterback, he should be the easy choice to go No. 1. Garrett is the overwhelming -1,800 favorite to go No. 1 on Thursday.
2. San Francisco 49ers – Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
The Niners need to reconstruct the back of defense, and Lattimore is a franchise corner-caliber talent who can fill that need.
3. Chicago Bears – Jamal Adams, S, LSU
The Bears still have major holes to plug in their defense, the secondary chief among them. Adams would shore up the safety position for years to come.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama
The Jags should continue to invest in their defense, and Allen is a beast who can become a dominant interior pass-rusher.
5. Tennessee Titans – Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama
Despite his recent off-the-field issues, Foster is easily the best linebacking prospect in this draft, and the Titans could use him to improve their run defense.
6. New York Jets – OJ Howard, TE, Alabama
The Jets desperately need another receiving weapon, especially after Brandon Marshall’s exit. Howard is hands down the best tight end in his class, and wouldprovide another dimension to the Jets offense.
7. Los Angeles Chargers – Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford
The Chargers struck gold by drafting Joey Bosa last year, and pairing him with another top pass-rusher in Thomas – if he’s still on the board – would be the way to go.
8. Carolina Panthers – Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
With the always injury-prone Jonathan Stewart getting older, the Panthers could do with drafting their back of the future. Fournette is the best one on the board, and he would fit very well in the Carolina’s power-rushing scheme.
9. Cincinnati Bengals – Haason Reddick, LB, Temple
The former walk-on has shot up draft boards in recent months, and has the versatility to play any spot in a 4-3 defense. That should make him the pick for the Bengals, who need to fix a defense that took a big step down last season.
10. Buffalo Bills – Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
It didn’t go so well for the Bills the last time they got a Clemson wide receiver. But Williams is a beast because of his size and ball skills, and Buffalo is still in desperate need of pass-catchers. Williams is a good bet at -200 to be selected ahead of fellow top receiving prospect, John Ross.
11. New Orleans Saints – Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State
The Saints still haven’t made a move on the Pats’ Malcolm Butler, but even if they do, drafting another good corner in Gareon Conley should be a wise choice.
12. Cleveland Browns – Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
The Browns passed on Trubisky at No. 1 – which is the right move – but they won’t do it again at 12. Trubisky is certainly not ready to start, but he has enough upside for the Browns to take a shot at him.
13. Arizona Cardinals – Corey Davis, WR, W. Michigan
With Michael Floyd’s departure last season, Arizona an opening at the No. 2 receiver. Corey Davis is not only capable of filling that role almost immediately, but also has the potential to succeed Larry Fitzgerald as the Cards’ go-to receiver.
14. Philadelphia Eagles – Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
Darren Sproles is getting up there in age, and young quarterback Carson Wentz could use a versatile back in McCaffrey to be his safety valve for years to come.
15. Indianapolis Colts – Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan
It remains to be seen exactly what Peppers’ best position in the pros will be, but whatever it is, the Colts could certainly use a defensive player with his talent.
16. Baltimore Ravens – Cam Robinson, OL, Alabama
The Ravens’ M.O. for years has been building through the lines, and after getting Ronnie Stanley last year, Robinson would solidify that line even more whether he plays tackle or guard.
17. Washington Redskins – Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
Hooker has a bunch of injury concerns which could see him dip on draft day, but the Redskins would be wise to snap him up to play center-field in their still-shaky secondary.
18. Tennessee Titans – Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss
The Titans need to surround Marcus Mariota with more playmakers, and Engram’s versatility – he played tight end in college but projects to be a receiver in the pros – makes him a very good fit.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Cook has a checkered history of off-field issues, but he’s got all the tools to be a star in the league. And after Doug Martin’s drug suspension, the Bucs have a chance to draft their next franchise back.
20. Denver Broncos – Garett Bolles, OT, Utah
This year’s tackle class isn’t the best, but the Broncos need as many competent linemen they can get.
21. Detroit Lions – Charles Harris, DE, Missouri
The Lions need to replenish their pass rush, and Harris – who had 16 sacks in his last two years at Mizzou – would be the ideal 4-3 end to put opposite Ziggy Ansah.
22. Miami Dolphins – Forrest Lamp, OG, WKU
The Dolphins’ O-line would benefit from the addition of Lamp, who is a terrific athlete and is as tough as they come.
23. New York Giants – Jarrad Davis, ILB, Florida
The Giants defense improved by leaps and bounds last year, but their problems at linebacker persist. Enter Davis, who figures to be a contributor right from Day 1.
Love the fit here. Davis is my No. 1 inside linebacker, a day one contributor with athleticism and A-plus intangibles.
24. Oakland Raiders – Kevin King, CB, Washington
The Raiders secondary still needs improving, and King’s combination of length and speed should help in that regard.
25. Houston Texans – Takkarist McKinley, OLB, UCLA
The Texans badly need a quarterback, but taking a project this high would be a reach. Instead, they should continue building on their strength, which is defense. Putting a heat-seeking missile like McKinley in a pass-rushing rotation with Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney would be scary as hell for opposing QBs.
26. Seattle Seahawks – Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State
McDowell has the talent to be a much higher pick, but his questionable motor will likely bring him down. The Seahawks have a history of taking those flawed talents and turning them into stars, so don’t be surprised if they’re the ones who take a chance on the Spartan.
27. Kansas City Chiefs – Zach Cunningham, ILB, Vanderbilt
Derrick Johnson is on his last legs in KC, and Cunningham would be an ideal pick to succeed the veteran at the heart of the Chiefs’ defense.
28. Dallas Cowboys – Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
Defense – the pass rush in particular – continues to be Dallas’ main area of weakness. Enter Derek Barnett, who was insanely productive in his time in Tennessee, and looks like a great fit for that 4-3 defense.
29. Green Bay Packers – Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
The Packers were just decimated with injuries to their corners last year, so it won’t be a surprise if they draft one in Round 1. The Alabama product Humphrey has the pedigree and the talent to address that need for Green Bay.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers – John Ross, WR, Washington
Receiver is hardly a glaring need for the Steelers, but the thought of Ross’ blinding speed coupled with Big Ben’s bombs could persuade Pittsburgh to take the U-Dub star.
31. Atlanta Falcons – Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan
The Falcons pass rush improved significantly last season with Vic Beasley finally coming on strong. But they could use another edge guy opposite Beasley, and Taco Charlton has the tools to be that guy.
32. New Orleans Saints – Adoree Jackson, CB, USC
Two corners in the first round? If any team needs to do it, it’s the Saints. Jackson is a top coverage corner, and would also be a terrific weapon in the return game.
