Betting on the Anaheim Ducks (+1.5)
Friday’s Game 5 showdown between the Anaheim Ducks and the Edmonton Oilers has got to be one of the most thrilling contests in recent NHL postseason memory.
Down three goals in the third period, the Ducks staged an unbelievable rally to send the game into extra sessions before pulling away with the victory. Corey Perry was their undoubted hero of the evening, scoring the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to go with his two assists. In turn, Anaheim became the first team in league playoff history to come back from a three-goal deficit with less than four minutes left in regulation.
Perry wasn’t the only player who delivered for the Ducks, as Ryan Getlzaf assisted on the game-winner and also found the back of the net once, giving him a whopping 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) this postseason. Meanwhile, Rickard Rakell celebrated his 24th birthday with a bang by adding a helper and the game-tying goal with 15 seconds left in the third period.
It’s clear that Anaheim’s experience is getting the better of the Oilers, with Friday’s game being their third multi-goal comeback win of the series. Closing out the series in Edmonton on Sunday will be a tall order, but the Ducks are definitely heading into Game 6 with so much confidence that it’s hard to argue against the possibility that they can muster up another come-from-behind victory when their backs are against the wall once again.
Betting on the Edmonton Oilers (-1.5)
For the first time since mid-March, the Edmonton Oilers suffered a three-game losing streak on Friday, and it could not have come at a worse time.
Yet despite the shocking defeat at Anaheim in Game 5 and with just a 2-3 home record in the playoffs, the Oilers are still favored to win this Sunday to set a winner-take-all Game 7 back in SoCal. Part of the reason for that is because the team’s top producers are still getting it done on the attack.
The standout trio of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Drake Caggiula each scored for Edmonton in Game 5, with McDavid and and Draisaitl combining for eight points over the last three games. As for Caggiula, the 22-year-old rookie has now scored in back-to-back contests himself.
However, the Oilers have been simply outhustled by the Ducks in 50-50 situations. Through Games 3 and 5, they’ve lost the faceoff battle to Anaheim by a margin of 125-83 (60 percent).
It also doesn’t help that goalie Cam Talbot, who registered a staggering 60 saves on Friday, didn’t get what looked to be a goalie interference call in Rakell’s game-tying goal work in his favor. That goes without saying that his fellow blueliners aren’t doing a very good job at blocking the Ducks’ multitude of shot attempts.
This young Edmonton squad has got to figure out how to limit the Ducks’ assault quick, and we’re not sure that they can contain their Pacific Division rivals for another night.
Writer’s Prediction
The Ducks (+105) wrap up the series with another tense victory in overtime, 3-2.
