Betting on Dominic Thiem (-260)
World No. 9 Dominic Thiem put on a truly dominant performance in his Madrid Masters quarterfinal match against Borna Coric. Thiem won an impressive 38 of 49 first- and second-serve points in the match and did not give up a break point as he rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Thiem is having another very successful season on clay court surfaces. The 23-year-old won his sixth career clay-court title earlier in the year in Rio de Janeiro. He made a quick exit in the Monte Carlo Masters, but he made up for it by reaching the final in Barcelona, as he knocked out World No. 1 Andy Murray in the semifinals.
Thiem should be the much fresher player in this matchup with Cuevas. Due to playing one match fewer and winning two of his three matches in straight-sets, Thiem has played just seven sets in the tournament to Cuevas’ 12.
Betting on Pablo Cuevas (+200)
Pablo Cuevas has certainly taken the scenic route toward the semifinals of the Madrid Masters. The World No. 27 needed all three sets to win all four of his matches. In fact, five of his last six matches have now gone at least three sets. He’s now 15-8 on the season and 11-4 on clay.
Cuevas should enter this semifinal with a lot of confidence after orchestrating a stunning turnaround in his quarterfinal matchup with Alexander Zverev. After losing the first set, the Uruguayan proceeded to win the second set 6-0, with the help of an audacious no-look winner.

have the greatest track record against top-10-ranked opposition; he’s just 4-10 against them in his career. However, he does hold a big straight-sets win over World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka earlier this season at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The Uruguayan also won the lone meeting between himself and Thiem. The two battled in a wildly competitive first-round matchup at the French Open back in 2015, with Cuevas coming out on top, 7-6(7), 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5.
Writer’s Prediction
Cuevas’ luck runs out as Thiem (-260) books his ticket to the final in three sets.
