Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (53-28)
The Dodgers ended their up-and-down series with the Los Angeles Angels on a high note, as they dominated their crosstown rivals Thursday night, 6-2. With the win, they have now won six of their last eight games on the road.
The offense and defense are simply clicking for the Dodgers, particularly in their last 21 games, where they are 18-3. Batting-wise, though they only hover around the .265 mark in that stretch, they are still able to blast 47 home runs and 123 RBIs. In the same time frame, their defense has allowed no more than two runs 10 times, while also limiting them to 10 or less hits 18 times.
Cody Bellinger has slowed down from his recent batting onslaught, but he should still remain as the most dangerous hitter of the Dodgers for at least the next week. The 21-year-old is sporting a .324 batting average in his last 19 games, and he has 12 homers and 25 RBIs in that span.
Accompanying Bellinger and the team on D is another man who’s on fire: Alex Wood. The veteran lefty is 8-0 with an smooth 1.86 ERA in 13 appearances this season. What’s even more impressive is he has only given up five runs in his last 43 innings.
The Dodgers have won all but one of the six previous meetings with the Padres.
Betting on the San Diego Padres (33-46)
The Padres picked up another win Thursday night, as they shutout the Atlanta Braves, 6-0, and only gave up four hits in 31 at-bats. It was their fifth win in seven games.
Such a stretch should help in their confidence when facing a foe like the Dodgers, who they have lost to five out of six times this season. It’s still a tall task, though, especially since they are dead-last in hits and the Dodgers are allowing the fewest hits in the whole league.
Three Padres to keep an eye on on offense tomorrow are Carlos Asuaje, Erick Aybar, and Cory Spangenberg, with the trio combining to go 17-for-48 (.354) in the past week, including six runs and five RBIs. They have been stepping up in place of the team’s other key hitters who are currently slumping, namely Will Myers, Manuel Margot, and Hunter Renfroe.
As for the defense, Clayton Richard is next in line to start in the mound. He’s 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 16 starts this season. One of his better stats on the year is ground ball rate, with the 58.5 percent clip leading the National League at the time of his last start. He will be hoping to maintain that rate, since the current Dodgers roster is 47-for-145 (.348) against him all-time.
Writer’s Prediction
The Dodgers (-205) should have no problems with the Padres, 8-4.
