Betting on the New York Yankees
Pitching for the Yankees in the opening game of this three-game set is Michael Pineda (7-4, 4.12 ERA). He struggled mightily in Sunday’s loss to the Texas Rangers, allowing seven runs on six hits and a walk in just four innings of action. Pineda had trouble all game long with his command, throwing just 48 of his 71 pitches for strikes. That enabled Texas to lock in on his pitches with Adrian Beltre, Shin-Soo Choo and Drew Robinson all going yard.
With Pineda still a big question mark at this point, the onus is on the Yankee hitters to provide some much-needed runs tonight. One guy who’s swinging the bat well for New York is the red-hot Aaron Judge. The 25-year-old has been on a tear in his rookie season, leading the Bronx Bombers in batting average, homers, RBIs and on-base percentage this campaign. Judge, a potential Triple Crown candidate, is the first Yankees rookie to reach base in 30 straight games since Charlie Keller (40 straight games) in 1939.
Betting on the Houston Astros (54-26)
Starting for Houston in the series opener is Lance McCullers (7-1, 2.53 ERA). He was solid in his last start against the Seattle Mariners, allowing just one run in five innings of work. The 23-year-old threw 51 of his 76 pitches for strikes in his return after a two-week absence due to a lower back injury. Key to McCullers’ success this season has been his low homer rate. He has surrendered just one home run over his past 46.1 innings.
McCullers can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Houston hitters to step up their play tonight. One guy who needs to contribute for the Astros is George Springer. He leads the Astros in homers and RBIs this campaign. Springer will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing Pineda as he is 4-of-14 in his career against the Yankee starter with two homers and six RBIs to boot. Another player who’s swinging the bat well for Houston is Josh Reddick. He’s batting .526 in his last six games with two home runs and seven RBIs
Writer’s Prediction
New York (+150) wins, 5-3.
