Betting on the New York Mets (47-52)
The red-hot Mets were dealt a bit of a setback as they fell 6-3 last night. Prior to that loss, the Mets had gone 6-1 in their last seven games. Starter Steven Matz had a disastrous outing as he gave up six earned runs in just three innings of work.
The Mets might be in danger of having to deal with another bad start with Chris Flexen set to make his first ever major league appearance. The 23-year-old will take the place of Zack Wheeler, who is currently on the DL. Flexen, though, has been very good in Class A and Double-A this season, where he’s gone 6-1 with a 1.76 ERA.
The Mets offense will also look to bounce back after being limited to just two runs on four hits last night. Prior to going 1-of-4 in that game, Yoenis Cespedes had gone 4-of-7 with two homers and four RBIs in the first two games against the Padres.
Betting on the San Diego Padres (44-57)
The Padres avoided a potential sweep of the Mets as they took last night’s game, 6-3. The Pads chased Matz away while Jhoulys Chacin and the bullpen successfully held on to the lead. Inconsistent San Diego is now just 6-7 in 13 games since the All-Star break.
Luis Perdomo will be tasked to spark a rare Padres win streak as he takes the mound tonight. The 24-year-old, though, has been very inconsistent this season. He had a strong start in his last outing as he gave up just one earned run in six innings, only to be let down by three unearned runs due to two Padres errors. But in his previous start, he gave up five earned runs in just 2.1 innings of work.
These types of up-and-down performances have gone on over his last five starts and if the trend holds up, he could be due for another letdown tonight.
Writer’s Prediction
The Mets (EVEN) get a serviceable start from Flexen, which is enough to see them get the bounce-back win against the Padres.
