Betting on the Carolina Panthers (+135)
The Panthers had an encouraging Week 1. They earned a good, 27-17 win over the Houston Texans after quality play from players on both units.
Cam Newton didn’t see the field, but his backups did good enough – Joe Webb threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns and Derek Anderson was 4-for-5 for 76 yards and one TD. Damiere Byrd, who only had one catch in all of last season, became the team’s key receiver for the game, finishing with four catches for 98 yards and a pair of TD grabs. Rookie running back Christian McCaffrey, on the other hand, was decent with seven carries for 33 yards (4.7 YPC). Look for Byrd and McCaffrey to build off their good performances moving forward.
As for the defense, it’s still aggressive despite being mostly subs and rookies. They got to the Texans’ QBs last week 17 times (12 hits and five sacks). It’s a type of production that can certainly make them be more relentless on the field.
Betting on the Tennessee Titans (-155)
Saying that the Titans stunk in their preseason debut would be a huge understatement. It was good that they held the New York Jets to seven points, but because they can’t establish anything offensively, that good effort on D got cancelled out. The 7-3 loss was by far the most uneventful game of the week.
The QBs were collectively 14-for-31 on their throws, with Alex Tanney’s 11-for-27 taking most of that ugly pie. Although it’s easy to point the finger on Tanney, it’s worth noting that his offensive linemen were seemingly sleeping on their jobs, as they gave up 11 QB hits, seven sacks, and 10 tackles for loss.
There were a few bright spots on the running back and wide receiver positions, though, with rookie Akeem Judd accumulating 53 yards in five carries and his co-rookie, Taywan Taylor, hauling in four receptions for 56 yards.
The defense was active in terms of keeping the opposition out of the end zone, but stat-wise, they ought to be more productive. They only got to the QB four times in Week 1, which isn’t good since it’s the Jets’ awful O-line.
