Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (59-61)
The Baltimore Orioles couldn’t prevent the Seattle Mariners from winning their head-to-head race towards 60 wins this season, as the former fell to the latter on Tuesday, 3-1.
Over their last 12 games, the Orioles needed five or more runs to come away with a victory and pulled through with six wins during than span. However, they’ve also lost all six of those other games after they failed to reach the five-run mark, including Tuesday’s defeat.
It’s tough to gauge which side of Baltimore’s offense we’re about to see this Wednesday, so perhaps it’s up to veteran starter Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7, 6.25 ERA) to pitch the team to victory. Jimenez threw a season-high 11 strikeouts in his last start, but was also hit by a ball in his right calf to cut his outing against the Oakland A’s short to just 5.1 innings last Friday.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners (60-61)
Not only did the Seattle Mariners snap their five-game losing streak with Tuesday’s win, they also gained a half-game lead over the Orioles for the final AL wild card spot.
The M’s are no stranger to losing close decisions, but Tuesday’s two-run lead may signal the start of better fortunes once more. Prior to their five-game skid, six of their most-recent wins were decided by three runs or less. What’s even better is that they came out on top with star third baseman Kyle Seager absent from Tuesday’s contest with a stomach virus.
Seager may have to sit out Wednesday’s clash against the Orioles again, but at least fellow teammate, Robinson Cano, has had Baltimore’s upcoming starter’s number. Cano has a glowing .643 batting average along with two home runs and four RBIs lifetime against Jimenez.
Rookie Marco Gonzales (0-0, 8.49 ERA) will be making his second big-league start for Seattle, and his debut from last Friday is rather promising. Gonzales gave up just one run on four hits in 4.1 innings of work against playoff-hungry division rivals the Los Angeles Angels.
Writer’s Prediction
The Mariners (-104) take the rubber match in their three-game set versus the Orioles in nail-biting fashion, 4-3.
