Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers picked up their first preseason win of the year this past Saturday by barely getting past the neighboring Los Angeles Rams, 21-19.
Los Angeles’ offense, which only put up a total of 24 points through the first two weeks, nearly equalled that mark in Week 3 against the Rams thanks fueled hot start from veteran quarterback Philip Rivers (6-for-6, 85 yards and a touchdown). Granted that it’s only the preseason, there’s not much of a concern with this unit just yet.
On the other hand, it’s the Chargers’ defense thats had some issues with consistency. The Seattle Seahawks torched them for 48 points in Week 1, yet they held the supposedly potent New Orleans Saints offense to just seven points in Week 2. Their D was on pace to repeat that sound performance in Week 3 by holding the Rams scoreless in the first half, only to surrender 19 unanswered points in the second half. The Rams should’ve also beaten them if not for Travis Coons missing a 33-yard game-winning field goal.
Luckily for the Chargers, they’re about to face a similarly inconsistent team in the 49ers in their preseason finale. Which leads us to…
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have virtually had the same issues as the Chargers this preseason.
San Francisco’s QBs in likely regular-season starter Brian Hoyer and his backup, CJ Beathard, have actually come through for the team thus far. Hoyer made the most out of his extended playing time in Week 2 with 176 passing yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Meanwhile, rookie Beathard has thrown for at least 100 yards and a one TD in each of his three postseason appearances.
But in the end, it’s the 49ers’ defense that has let the team down yet again, surrendering over 30 points to the supposedly mediocre offenses of the Vikings and the Denver Broncos. The one-point loss to Minnesota this past Sunday past hurts the most, as their backup defensive units allowed the Vikes to stage a massive 32-point rally in the second half.
Week 4’s battle between the Bolts and the Niners will likely be decided with defensive play once more. As it stands, it’s the home team who’s at a bigger disadvantage entering Thursday’s contest.
