Betting on Liverpool (+103)

Liverpool have bounced back well from their disappointing 3-3 draw with Watford in their season opener as they’ve won their next three games in a row. They beat Hoffenheim twice (6-3 on aggregate) to progress to the Champions League group stage with relative ease. And sandwiched in between was a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.

Liverpool’s attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah has started the season very strongly. New boy Salah and Firmino both picked up their second goals of the season in their 4-2 win over Hoffenheim at Anfield in midweek, while Mane has scored in each of the Reds’ two Premier League matches.

Mane also scored twice in Liverpool’s two wins over Arsenal last season. It was the first time Liverpool pulled the league double over the Gunners since 1999-2000.

Liverpool’s aggressive pressing style under Jurgen Klopp has seen them perform very well against the rest of the top six teams in the Premier League. Last season, Liverpool finished undefeated (five wins, five draws) in 10 games against those teams, which is an impressive feat.

Liverpool’s record at Anfield last season was arguably even more impressive. They went 12-5-2 with 45 goals scored (the third-most at home) and just 18 conceded.

Betting on Arsenal (+217)

Arsenal’s struggles at Stoke continued as they once again lost 1-0 to their bogey team last weekend. Since returning to the Premier League in 2008, Stoke have now won six of their 11 home games against the Gunners.

Much has been made of Arsenal’s switch to a three-man defense, but early performances this season seem to indicate that even with the new formation they are still the same inconsistent team that has problems keeping things tight at the back.

The Gunners’ center backs have not been particularly impressive thus far and will face another difficult test with Liverpool’s intense pressing.

But Liverpool have shown that their defense still has similar question marks as well, and Arsenal have the offensive weapons to hurt the Reds. Olivier Giroud, in particular, can be a real handful in set pieces if he does get the call to feature at some point.

Arsenal, though, have not won at Anfield since 2015 and had the second-worst record against other teams in the top six last season. They won just twice in 10 games with three draws and five defeats, the most out of those six teams.

Writer’s Prediction

Liverpool (+103) once again put Arsenal to the sword at Anfield as they come away 3-1 winners.
