Betting on the Montana Grizzlies (1-0)
Now it gets tough for Montana. Following a walk-in-the-park 45-23 win over FCS program Valparaiso at home last Saturday, the Grizzlies take the road for the first time this season to face Pac-12 heavyweight Washington. The Huskies hold a 16-1-1 edge in the series against the Grizzlies but Saturday’s showdown is their first since 1951.
Montana’s offense was firing on all cylinders against the Crusaders. The Grizzlies finished with 538 yards of offense to extend their season-opening home winning run to 14 games. Quarterback Reese Phillips threw three of his four second-half touchdowns in a span of six offensive plays to spark the rout for the Grizzlies. The fifth-year senior thrived in his first career start for Montana, passing for 381 yards and four touchdowns against Valparaiso. Benefiting from Phillips’ solid play was sophomore receiver Jerry Louie-McGee. He caught nine passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns against the Crusaders.
However, while the Grizzlies’ offense shined against Valparaiso, their defense did not. Montana let the Crusaders score just 23 points, but also allowed 450 total yards, which doesn’t sound great heading into a matchup with a national championship contender. The Grizzlies are playing an FBS program for the first time since losing 17-12 at Wyoming in 2014. Montana lost to Tennessee, 42-16, in 2011 in their most-recent contest against a Power 5 conference school.
Betting on the Washington Huskies (1-0)
It wasn’t as pretty or awe-inspiring as we thought it would be, but the Washington Huskies still opened the new season with a 30-14 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday. Quarterback Jake Browning threw two second-half touchdown passes for the Huskies who didn’t take the lead until the game was more than 26 minutes old. The Huskies will look for a much better start this coming Saturday when they host the Montana Grizzlies at Husky Stadium.
One guy who needs to step up for Washington this coming weekend is Myles Gaskin. The junior running back didn’t get enough touches in the win against Rutgers, rushing for just 59 yards on seven carries for a gaudy 8.4 average. Gaskin did some damage via the passing game, however, catching five passes for 79 yards and one touchdown. It’s paramount for Browning that he involve Gaskin more against Montana. The speedster has been a vital cog in Washington’s recent success, topping 1,300 rushing yards in each of his first two college seasons. Gaskin will look to dissect a Montana defensive line that allowed 123 yards on the ground in their season-opening win against Valparaiso.
The Huskies are 8-2 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 home games.
