Betting on Sam Querrey (-145)
Well, what do you know, an American has actually made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open. That’s Querrey, who’ll be in full gear in hopes of extending his stay in the tournament.
Querrey landed a spot in the quarters after expelling Mischa Zverev out of the US Open with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory. The manner of how Querrey dominated Zverev sends as strong of a message to Anderson as his serves in the fourth round. Querrey flexed some serious muscle against Zverev, as the 29-year-old San Francisco native blasted Zverev’s defense with 18 aces, while winning an astounding 91 percent of his first serve points. Querrey also produced 55 winners.
Anderson would be the last one surprised of the way Querrey played, as he’s seen each other many times before. That doesn’t necessarily mean Anderson has no reason to be shaking right now. After all, Querrey is 9-6 in their all-time matchups.
Betting on Kevin Anderson (+115)
Querrey could chirp all he wants about his head-to-head record against Anderson, but last time we checked, it was Anderson who won their most recent collision. Anderson beat Querrey a couple of weeks ago at the Canadian Masters, 6-4, 6-1, and will be looking to double down on that victory.
Anderson meets Querrey anew on the heels of a hard-earned 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 win over Paolo Lorenzi, which he had to sweat for much longer than Querrey’s previous match.
In any case, Anderson will be bringing his power game into the quarterfinals. Like Querrey, Anderson relies on a powerful service game, and we shouldn’t be surprised of the South African gives the American a dose of his own medicine. Against Lorenzi, Anderson made the Italian swallow 18 aces.
In addition, Anderson won 84 percent of his first serve points, which, notwithstanding the crazy first-serve stat of Querrey in the fourth round, was, well, crazy.
Writer’s Prediction
Anderson (+115) gets a sweet five-set victory.
