Prior to last season, the Michigan State Spartans enjoyed a sweet 3-0 series against the Penn State Nittany Lions, winning both straight up and against the spread (ATS). Betting on the Penn State Nittany Lions 7-1 (-9)
Penn State lost last week in dramatic fashion. This is a prime letdown spot for sure with another loss killing any chance of them making the playoffs. The final outcomes was Penn State losing by a point. No matter how you get there that kind of loss stings. Frittering the game away when you have the best running back in the nation says something.
Speaking of that back, Saquon Barkley has more game under 100 yards rushing than above it. As an NFL talent he is tantalizing but he is not the running force this team was hoping for.
The Penn State defense was dominated by Ohio State – more than 500 yards of offense. This will be a much easier test as Michigan State does not have the same level of firepower.
Betting on the Michigan State Spartans 6-2 (+9)
Michigan State has bounced back this season in terms of wins but they are not very pretty to watch. They can’t play catchup if the Nittany Lions come out fast like they did last week The Spartans are also coming off a tough loss, losing at Northwestern in overtime. Things seemed to have normalized in East Lansing this season after last year’s disaster.
The defense has been good so if the Spartans want to get back into the contender group in the B10 they need to ramp up the offense. Brian Lewerke did have his best day as a starter in last week’s loss. They need him to continue to progress.
The Gang Green defense is eighth in yards allowed this season. They are 4th against the run so they should be able to contain Barkley. It just doesn’t mean they will win.
Writer’s Prediction
I wish I had the look ahead on this one before last week. My guess is that it would have been 10 or more. Looks like a buying opportunity on PSU unless you are a psychology major. I never quite believed Penn State was among the national elite but they are still in a tier above Michigan State. This one might be tough for the first half but generally Penn State has been good about making adjustments at half time. Pick: Penn State (-9)
