Betting on the Chicago Bears (3-9)
The Bears have lost 5 in a row but their recent loss to lowly San Francisco, by a point has got to sting a little. The past two weeks the offense has gotten really cold. They have only scored 17 points combined the last couple of weeks and the passing game is the worst in the NFL. It was bad before the Bears handed the reigns to rookie Mitch Trubisky but he has not exactly given it a spark. In eight starts he has gone over 200 yards only once.
It is only partly the rookie’s fault as the Bears have not given him much to work with. It is hard to have a lot of success when you don’t have guys who can win a lot of one on one matchups. Thankfully RB Jordan Howard gives them some sense of consistent offense. The Bears defense is middle of the pack respectable and probably better than expected. They are between 12 and 15 in all major categories and it keeps them in the game.
They are doing it without monster plays too. Akiem Hicks leads the team in sacks with just 7 and nobody has more than one interception. Against a far from elite Bengals team there is every reason to think the defense can keep them in the game. It has in most contests this season.
Betting on the Cincinnati Bengals(5-7)
The Monday Nighter is getting a lot of pub for the ferocity of the players. It was a close game that was ultimately won by the better team (not Cincinnati) so everything kind of played out as expected. The Bengals might be emotionally burnt out now though.
It might have only netted 20 points but it was one of the better offensive showing for Cincinnati. Andy Dalton did throw any picks and they were able to move the ball. A.J. Green was force fed the ball and it yielded two touchdowns. It is amazing how sometimes teams get in their own heads and forget which players are elite. The running game was solid with Gio Bernard taking on the feature role this week. Hard to know what they are doing with their backfield though.
The Bengals defense has been solid all season long so they should be able to suppress a Bears offense that is pretty limited. Assuming they keep the running game in check it should make for a tidy victory for the home side.
Writer’s Prediction
That is a lot of points for a team that is mediocre at best but they are at home. Curious to see where the market goes on this one. I can see how the Bengals win this one easily just by playing to their strengths and personnel. Unfortunately I can also see a version of this game that is super defense oriented wherein both offenses have trouble moving the ball. I am banking on the former. Pick: Bengals (-6)
