Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (16-3)
The Mountaineers may have hit a rough patch of late, but they remain a very dangerous opponent for any team in the nation. That’s primarily because of their stingy defense that allows just 64.9 points per game. West Virginia’s nasty defense was definitely felt by the Texas Longhorns lasts Saturday, as the Mountaineers limited Shaka Smart’s boys to only 34.0 percent shooting from the field. The Longhorns also committed 15 turnovers during their 86-51 loss to WVU. The Horned Frogs are a high-scoring team, but they are likely to be cut down to size by the Mountaineers’ relentless defense that forces opponents to commit a dizzying total of 19.2 turnovers per game. The Mountaineers are 12-0 SU all-time against TCU.
Betting on the TCU Horned Frogs (14-5)
Sure, WVU’s defense is one of the best in the nation, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Horned Frogs don’t have an anti-dote for it. For one, they have a great frontcourt duo in 6-foot-7 guard Kenrich Williams and 6-foot-11 forward Vladimir Brodziansky. The two could pose problems for the Mountaineers, who will need to slow down the two big men to control the tempo. It’s going to be easier said than done, of course. Williams is averaging 14.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Brodziansky, on the other hand, is scoring 15.4 points per contest, while shooting 60.5 percent from the floor. It would take the Mountaineers a great amount of effort to contain the two, which could cause fatigue for the West Virginia. As a team, TCU is fifth in the nation with 87.5 points per game. TCU is 9-1 SU in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction:
WVU wins, 81-71.
