Betting on the Georgetown Hoyas (13-8)
It’s a tough time to be Hoyas fan these days. The team has lost its last two games, and has only won three of its first 10 assignments in conference play. That said, the Hoyas are still entertaining to watch, largely because of their offense that pumps out an average of 78.0 points per game. The Hoyas are fully bought into head coach Patrick Ewing’s idea of good ball movement, as they are 17th in the nation with 17.3 assists per game, though they often hurt themselves by being a bunch of careless dudes. The Hoyas are turning the ball over 16.2 points per game. They had 17 turnovers in their 85-77 loss last Saturday to Creighton. Xavier also scores a lot of points, and giving the Musketeers extra scoring opportunities is the last thing Georgetown would want to do this Saturday. The Hoyas are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games as underdogs, so there’s a reason to believe they’ll at least hang with Xavier.
Betting on the Xavier Musketeers (19-3)
The Musketeers are coming off a 73-68 road win over St. John’s to extend their unbeaten run to five games. As implied earlier, offense has been a strength of Xavier. The school is putting up the third-most points in the Big East with 72.6 per game. The Musketeers are shooting 49.9 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. Like Georgetown, the X-Men’s offense is characterized by being selfless, as they are 12th in the nation with 17.5 assists per contest. Unlike the Hoyas, Xavier knows how to take care of the leather, as they have the 26th best assist-to-turnover ratio with 1.377. Controlling the rebound would also be key for the Musketeers, who are 14-0 SU in their last 14 games as the designated home team. Xavier is second to Georgetown with 41.6 rebounds per game. The Hoyas get 42.0 per contest.
Writer’s Prediction:
Xavier wins, 78-72.
