Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots Predictions, Picks, Odds and Betting Preview – NFL Preseason Week 3 – August 16, 2018

The last time the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots met on the field, some dude named Nick Foles led Philly to a Super Bowl victory. Both teams lock horns again this Thursday, and while it’s just a glorified exhibition match, a degree of rivalry and animosity should be felt.

The Pats are the current favorites to win the Super Bowl next year with odds of +700 (after their +250 to take the AFC) while the Eagles are right behind them with a price of +800. Does Belichick’s team still have what it takes to go all the way or will this preseason matchup be a sign for a changing of the guard?

Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles

Neither Carson Wentz nor Nick Foles showed up last Thursday, as the Eagles was thrashed by the Pittsburgh Eagles, 31-14. That’s a preseason game, though, in which both teams barely utilized their regular-season starters, so it would be foolish how each team would fare next season. Quarterback Nate Sudfield completed 10 of 14 passes for 140 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions while Joe Callahan connected on just eight of 18 passes for 91 passing yards. The running back group offers more intrigue, with Corey Clement and Josh Adams leading the team with 30 rushing yards each against the Steelers. It remains to be known whether either or both of running backs Matt Jones and Donnel Pumphrey will see action against the Pats after missing the Steelers game. Also keep an eye on Philly rookie tight end Dallas Goedert, who had four receptions with 66 receiving yards and a touchdown in Week 1 of the preseason.

Betting on the New England Patriots

Th Pats kicked off their preseason campaign with what they do the best: win, defeating the Redskins at home, 26-17. Brian Hoyer took over most of the quarterback duties for New England, as the veteran backup threw for 144 yards on 16 -of-23 completions with zero touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Jeremy Hill debuted for the Pats by turning 11 carries into 51 rushing yards, The Pats rushed for a total of 140 rushing yards against Washington’s 119. New England’s defense in that game, however, certainly did not give Bill head coach Belichick a reason to smile (he doesn’t’ most of the time, but still) as the Patriots gave up 233 passing yards and finished the contest without an interception. The Pats did have three sacks, but the secondary will be pressed to perform against the Eagles.

Writer’s Prediction

New England wins, 28-24.
