Betting on the New York Giants (3-0)
The general expectation is that Eli Manning will still be open the season as the Giants’ starting quarterback, but there should be an increasing call for the team to make rookie Daniel Jones the starter. Jones is definitely helping that sentiment with solid showing so far in the preseason. In last week’s 25-23 road win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Duke Blue Devils program product threw for 141 passing yards on 9-for-11 completions. Manning made a brief appearance also and went 4 of 8 for 41 passing yards. There wasn’t much to show for the Giants’ backfield in terms of yardage, which only had 56 rushing yards on 26 carries, but it had two touchdowns. The Giants seem to be intent on giving their passing attack and ground offense equal opportunities. Over the first three weeks of the preseason, the Giants have passed the ball 99 times and rushed a total of 79 times. The Giants are tops in the preseason in the NFL with 297.0 passing yards per contest, while allowing an average of 2.0 sacks per game.
Betting on the New England Patriots (3-0)
A rookie might just have bagged the Patriots’ backup quarterback job. Selected in the fourth round of this year’s NFL Draft, former Auburn Tigers signal-caller Jarrett Stidham shined again in last week’s 10-3 win over the Carolina Panthers, throwing the ball for 134 yards on 15-for-19 completions. Stidham showed patience in the pocket and poise amidst the pass rush pressure to deliver accurate passes. Stidham was the only non-Tom Brady quarterback that played against the Panthers, which speaks a lot about where he’s at in the competition for the backup role. Brady collected 75 passing yards on 8-for-12 passing. Stidham could get additional help in the passing attack this week with Josh Gordon probably set to see his first taste of action after getting reinstated. The Patriots’ rushing was productive too in the Panthers game with Nick Brossette leading the team with 53 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Sony Michel added 36 of the Patriots’ 129 yards on the ground. New England is sixth overall in the preseason with 128.3 rushing yards per contest.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 26-24.
