FAVORITES
Rory McIlroy (+1000)
For the first time in over a decade, McIlroy is on track to make an appearance at Harbour Town. McIlroy last played there in 2009. McIlroy didn’t look like much of himself in his last start, as he only managed a T32 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, his worst performance of the season, so far. Nevertheless, the Northern Irishman and current no. 1 in the world rankings has six top 10s in seven starts this year. That includes a win at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions last November.
Jon Rahm (+1800)
Rahm also took his first real stumble of the season at the Charles Schwab Challenge in which he missed the cut. It was the first time this season that Rahm wasn’t able to make it past the cut, so that should only be taken as a mere aberration. Rahm has four top 10s this season, including a T3 at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship last February and at the Farmers Insurance Open last January.
Justin Thomas (+1500)
Unlike McIlroy and Rahm, Thomas did not seem to have accumulated any rust due to the long pause of the season, as he finished with a T10 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. In his last four PGA Tour starts, Thomas has finished no worse than a T10. He also has two wins (The CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, Sentry Tournament of Champions).
HIGH-VALUE SLEEPERS
Matthew Fitzpatrick (+5000)
Ranked 25th in the world, Fitzpatrick is still searching for this first win of the season. He’s come close to that goal twice. He finished seventh at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions last November and a T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational back in March.
Gary Woodland (+3200)
After missing the cut for the first time this season at the Farmers Insurance Open back in February, Woodland went with a T40 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Those disappointing performances served as the springboard for Woodland’s rebound, as he managed to finish inside the top 12 in each of his succeeding three PGA Tour starts. At the Charles Schwab Challenge, the 36-year-old Woodland finished solo ninth overall.
LONG SHOTS
Jason Day (+6500)
Day is not having a great season so far, and his struggles continued over the weekend, as he missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge. That raised his total of missed cuts to four in eight starts, thus far this season. As a former world no. 1 player, however, Day shouldn’t be completely counted out. He’s shown some of his old brilliance with a fourth-place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last February.
Bill Haas (odds)
Haas missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge to bring his total to five missed cuts in 10 starts this season. Last year, Haas withdrew from the 2019 RBC Heritage due to a wrist issue. He did a whole lot better in 2018, though, when he went with a T7.
Writer’s Prediction
Rory McIlroy wins the 2020 RBC Heritage.
