Record: 7-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference
The high-scoring Cougars lived up to expectations on Saturday, as they continued to batter opponents with their juggernaut of an offense in a 41-10 home win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Quarterback Zach Wilson completed 18 of 32 pass attempts for 224 yards and three touchdowns against just an interception, while also rushing for 35 yards and a score on five carries. Overall, BYU had 410 total yards on offense to just 262 by the Hilltoppers, who also had to deal with the Cougars’ unforgiving defense. Wilson and the Cougars scored all those points despite having possession of the ball by just 26 minutes to Western Kentucky’s 33. That’s how efficient BYU’s offense is. In fact, BYU woke up on Saturday ranked third in the nation in points per play (0.735) and tops in yards per play (7.8) in the entire nation. In addition, BYU is averaging 44.2 points per contest — top 10 in the FBS. With that kind of offense, the Cougars can be expected to put up incredible numbers next weekend against Boise State that got out-gained by the Air Force Falcons last Saturday, 484-459. But the Cougars can also win with their defense. They are allowing just 13.4 points per game this season.
BYU is 5-1-1 against the spread in its last seven games overall.
Betting on the Boise State Broncos (+3)
Record: 2-0 Overall / 2-0 Conference
Quarterback Jack Sears did not disappoint in his first start for the Broncos this season. The USC transfer went 17-of-20 for 280 passing yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions to help Boise State score a 49-30 road win over Air Force last Saturday. Sears was named the starter for that game over Hank Bachmeier, who was left in Boise State for an undisclosed reason. It remains uncertain who between Bachmeier and Sears will start against BYU, but given the success of the latter and the momentum the offense has with him, it’s likely that Sears will be the one to call the plays on the field this coming weekend. Like BYU, Boise State is a high-scoring team that has scored at least 42 points in each of its first two games of the season. In their first game, Boise State dismantled the Utah State Aggies at home, 42-13. Boise State weathered the Air Force’s relentless ground game and countered with its own rushing attack that produced 179 yards on 29 carries. The Broncos can inch their way on the ground against BYU’s run defense that allowed Western Kentucky to pick up 156 rushing yards on 34 carries. On the season, Boise State is 7-of-15 on third-down tries.
Boise State is 6-0 in its last six games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
