Betting on the SMU Mustangs (-1.5)

Record: 7-5 Overall/5-3 Conference

The Mustants became bowl eligible thanks to a 7-5 overall record. They are als coming off a 34-31 win over the Memphis Tigers, to they have some momentum with them going into this matchup against BYU. One thing about SMU is that it can sling the ball. In fact, the Mustangs are third in the nation with 332.2 passing yards per game. They stretch the field well with a spectacular downfield weapons which are also a major reason why they are 10th in the nation with 37.8 points per game. Brigham Young’s pass defense isn’t really all that intimidating so it’s not going to be a big shock if SMU has its way from start to finish against the Cougars’ stop unit.

The Under is 5-1 in SMU’s last six bowl games.

Betting on the BYU Cougars (+1.5)

Record: 7-5 Overall/0-0 Conference

After losing four games in a row in October, BYU went down to work and finshed their regular-season schedule with a three-game win streak, which includes the Cougars’ 35-26 road win over the Stanford Cardinal on Nov. 26 on the road. While the Cougars aren’t having an ideal season, they can at least say that they have beaten a top-10 team earlier in the campaign when they took down the Baylor Bears at home in September, 26-20. And if SMU is dreaming of taking advantage of BYU’s defense, the Cougars are definitely also doing the same. For one, SMU is just 122nd in the nation with 36.4 points per game allowed. It was not that long ago when the Tulane Green Wave dropped 59 points on SMU.

The Over is 4-1 in BYU’s last five games after a win.

Writer’s Prediction

BYU wins, 33-30.
