Vols fans booed Lane Kiffin, but it was Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels who got the last laugh on Saturday, as Tennessee lost to its former coach at home, 31-26. Despite the loss, Tennessee showed it can hang on offense against an elite-scoring team. Hendon Hooker passed for 233 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions. He also rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Jabari Small added 92 rushing yards and a score on 21 carries. The Vols’ attack is decent enough to keep Alabama on its toes. Tennessee is third in the SEC with 39.3 points per game and fourth with 473.0 total yards per contest. Hooker’s ability to tuck the ball and run will be crucial against Alabama’s stop unit. As a team, Tennessee uses a run-heavy attack that could tire out Alabama’s front seven. There’s a chance for Tennessee to expose Alabama’s red-zone defense that entered Week 7 just 91st in the nation with an 88.89 opponents’ red zone scoring percentage.
The Vols, who are third in the conference with 249.14 rushing yards per game, are 4-0 against the spread in their last 4four games after a loss.
Betting on the Alabama Crimson Tide (-27)
Record: 6-1 Overall / 3-1 Conference
Alabama was not going to allow itself to lose for the second game in a row, as the Crimson Tide rebounded from their 41-38 road loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Oct. 9 by decimating the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road last Saturday to a tune of a 49-9 victory. The Crimson Tide are undefeated as the home team this season, and if they want to preserve their hopes for a ticket to the College Football Playoff, they can’t afford to lose in Tuscaloosa, especially against an unranked team. The good news for Alabama for this upcoming contest is that the Crimson Tide are 9-0 straight up in their last nine games as the home team against the Vols. Alabama is also 4-3-1 against the spread in those games. Trends aside, Alabama will be relying on an offense that is the best in the SEC, with 45.0 points per game. The Vols’ run defense is looking like a piece of wet cardboard for Alabama’s attack that is generating 166.43 rushing yards per game. Look for Alabama quarterback Bryce Young to have a field day connecting with John Metchie and the other receivers against Tennessee. Young had 348 passing yards and four touchdowns on 20/28 completions against Mississippi State.
Writer’s Prediction
Alabama wins, 47-20.
