Betting on the Michigan State Spartans (odds)
Record: 16-4 Overall/7-2 Conference
Michigan State scored a win against a major rival last Saturday, beating the Michigan Wolverines at home, 83-67. That was a great way to rebound for the Spartans who painfully lost to the Illinois Fighting Illini on the road on Jan. 25, 56-55. Michigan State’s bench helped took care of business in a grand way, as the Spartans’ second-unit scored 33 points to just six by the Wolverines’ relievers. That deep bench could be trouble for Maryland, which only got three points from its bench in the Terps’ recent outing. Michigan State’s 3-point shooting has been lethal this season, and the Spartans just showed that, as they went 39.1 percent from deep in the win over the Wolverines. On the season, Michigan State is seventh nationally with 39.1 percent shooting from behind the arc and No. 1 in the Big Ten with 39.8 3-point percent accuracy.
Michigan State is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Maryland Terrapins (odds)
Record: 11-10 Overall/3-7 Conference
Maryland is coming off a loss. The Terrapins, after back-to-back wins against Illinois and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, ran into the Indiana Hoosiers last Saturday and lost at home, 68-55. Maryland just couldn’t get its shots to fall. The Terps made just 28.6 percent from the field (16/56) and then shot just 6/27 from deep. Maryland isn’t really a great offensive team this season, as the Terps are just 215th in the nation in effective field goal percentage, but they can still find their way on that end of the floor. They nearly beat the Wisconsin Badgers on Jan. 9, 70-69 and even scored over 80 points in the win over the Fighting Illini. The duo of Eric Ayala and Fatts Russell in the backcourt will be leaned up by the Terps, who are scoring 70.9 points per outing. Ayala scored just six points in the Hoosiers game, so there’s an extra motivation for him to show up and play better this Tuesday.
The under is 2-1 in Maryland’s last three games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Maryland wins, 74-69.
