Betting on the Texas Longhorns (odds)

Record: 15-2 Overall/4-1 Conference

Texas has now won three games consecutively since its insane high-scoring 116-103 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats at home earlier this month. In their most recent outing, the Longhorns scored a 72-70 come-from-behind win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Austin last Saturday. Texas leaned on the hot hands of Marcus Carr, who scored 20 points, while Sir’Jabari Rice generated 18 points of his own for the Longhorns, whose offense remains one of the most prolific in Division I basketball this season. So far, the Longhorns are 11th with 82.1 points per game and 17th with 115.5 points per 100 possessions. Their ability to get inside and finish close at the basket has been quite an asset for Texas, which is shooting 57.1 percent on their 2-point shots. That sounds like trouble for Iowa State, which may have a stout defense overall, but is only ninth in the Big 12 with opponents shooting 53.6 percent inside the arc.

The Over is 7-3 in Texas’ last 10 games overall.

Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones (odds)

Record: 13-3 Overall/4-1 Conference

Iowa State is coming off a loss at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks last Saturday in Lawrence,62-60. While that defeat ended the Cyclones’ win streak to six games, Iowa State can still draw positives from such a close loss against the defending and reigning national champions. As mentioned earlier, the Cyclones have a stellar defense, one that is allowing just 57.7 points per game and 88.5 points per 100 possessions. Adjusted based on games against Big 12 teams only, Iowa State is No. 1 in the conference with only 92.1 points allowed per 100 possessions. The combo of Jaren Holmes and Gabe Kalscheur can create trouble for Texas on both ends of the floor. They are leading the Cyclones with 12.8 and 12.5 points per game, respectively.

Iowa State is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games as the home team.

Writer’s Prediction

Iowa State wins, 69-67.
