MLB Free Picks – Baseball Games of the Day – July 8, 2014

The All-Star break is fast approaching. Make the most of the season’s first half by betting on the regular games before we reach the Midsummer Classic. Here are five of the best baseball games to bet on today.

The New York Yankees opened up their series against the Cleveland Indians with a win despite starting an unproven pitcher in Shane Greene. Tonight, the Yankees will have another rookie pitcher – the 12-win Masahiro Tanaka – going head-to-head with Trevor Bauer. In a more explosive pitching matchup, Hyun-jin Ryu and Justin Verlander square off when the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Detroit Tigers in a high-profile interleague series opener (whole preview of Dodgers-Tigers here).

MLB Picks and Predictions for Tuesday, July 8, 2017

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians (7:00 PM ET)

Line: New York Yankees (-155) at Cleveland Indians (+140); total: 7.5 –  see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]The bats were productive last night for the New York Yankees, who edged the Indians 5-3 in the first game of their series against the Cleveland Indians. With the win, the Yankees are now 5-0 in their last five against the Indians. They’ll be gunning for their sixth straight against Cleveland when they start Masahiro Tanaka (12-3, 2.27 ERA). The Yankees are 7-1 in Tanaka’s eight road starts this season. Terry Francona’s club, though, have been great in second games of a series of late. The Indians are 4-0 in their last four game 2’s.

Writer’s Prediction: Tanaka flashes All-Star form, as Yankees beat Indians.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals (7:05 PM ET)

Line: Baltimore Orioles (+140) at Washington Nationals (-155); total: 8.0 –  see all MLB lines

With 43 runs in just seven games thus far this month, the Baltimore Orioles once again showed their fiery offense when they ran over the Washington Nationals, 8-2, last night. The O’s are now 3-0 in their last three games, lighting up the scoreboard with an average of 7.3 runs during that span. The over is also 3-0 in those games. Looking to put the cuffs on the O’s prolific offense is Washington starter Doug Fister (7-2, 2.93 ERA). The Nats are 8-0 in Fister’s last eight starts in Nationals Park.

Writer’s Prediction: The O’s offense overpowers Fister to notch another victory.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Detroit Tigers (7:08 PM ET)

Line: Los Angeles Dodgers (+108) at Detroit Tigers (-118); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been scoring in bundles lately, averaging eight runs over their last three games. They’ll need to sustain their robust offense tonight when they start Korean Hyun-jin Ryu (9-4, 3.08) against hosts Detroit Tigers. The Dodgers are 5-1 in Ryu’s (9-4, 3.08) last six starts on the road. Facing L.A.’s lineup is Justin Verlander (7-7, 4.71 ERA), who has been lights-out in his interleague career. Verlander has a record of 22-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 29 career starts against National League teams.

Writer’s Prediction: The Dodgers take the first game of the two-game set against Detroit.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:05 PM ET)

Line: Toronto Blue Jays (+140) at Los Angeles Angels (-155); total: 8.5 –  see all MLB lines

The offense that had propelled the Toronto Blue Jays to the top of the American League East for the first half of the season is now causing them to spiral out of control. The Blue Jays are now 0-5 in their last five games, wherein they were outscored 19-6. Toronto’s situation is the complete opposite of the Los Angeles Angels, who have scored 46 runs in eight games this month. However, 29 of those were scored against the Houston Astros, whose pitchers own a league-worst 7.78 ERA. The Angels are 6-1 in their last seven games against Toronto.

Writer’s Prediction: Los Angeles clips the Blue Jays anew.

San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics (10:05 PM ET)

Line: San Francisco Giants (+120) at Oakland Athletics (-130); total: 7.0 –  see all MLB lines

Madison Bumgarner

Madison Bumgarner (9-6, 3.09 ERA) will need his best stuff tonight if the San Francisco Giants are to beat the rolling Oakland A’s, who are on a five-game winning streak. What Bumgarner brings to the table later is his 5-0 record and 1.05 ERA in his last six road starts.  Opposite Bumgarner is Sonny Gray (8-3, 3.08 ERA), whose last three home starts have all translated to wins for Oakland.

Writer’s Prediction:  Giants even the series with a victory over Oakland.
