Betting on the Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore had its two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a gut-wrenching loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field. Bud Norris had a solid outing, allowing just three runs on seven hits in seven innings of action but was unfortunate not to get some run support from the Orioles offense.
[sc:MLB240banner ]Baltimore’s lack of offensive support was a surprise considering the Orioles are one of the hottest hitting teams in the majors right now. They are third in the entire MLB in batting average with a .277 clip. They are also second in the majors in slugging percentage at a remarkable .456.
The Orioles will fancy their chances of salvaging a split against the Mets as they will have their ace Ubaldo Jimenez (2-1, 1.59 ERA) on the mound tonight. He’s been the best starter of the Orioles this season, leading the team in ERA, FIP, SO/W and home runs given up. He has also fared well at Citi Field in the past, posting a solid 2.57 ERA in two starts there. He has only given up one home run over 14 innings of action at the Mets’ home field.
Expected to lead the Orioles in terms of offense is the red-hot Adam Jones. He is among the major league leaders in the batting categories, ranking second in batting average (.396) and fourth in OPS (1.078). He went 1-of-4 with a strikeout in the loss to the Mets on Tuesday.
The Orioles are winless in their last five road games.

What’s up with Bartolo Colon and the Baltimore Orioles?
The 41-year-old became the first pitcher in a century to beat the same opponent with seven different teams as he led the Mets to a nerve-wracking 3-2 win over the Orioles on Tuesday night. Colon took a shutout into the eighth inning before Manny Machado drilled a solo homer with one out. Colon allowed just one run on six hits in 7.2 innings of work for the Mets who finally snapped their two-game losing streak.
Key to the Mets’ early success this season has been their excellent starting pitching. Their starting pitchers have the third-lowest ERA in the majors with a 3.11 average. One of the rising stars for the Mets’ pitching staff is Jacob deGrom, New York’s scheduled starter for tonight.
He has a 2-3 record this season with a 3.34 ERA with 23 strikeouts and seven walks. He has struggled, however, in his last two outings, allowing a total of nine earned runs in just 10.1 innings of action against the Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees. The Mets lost both of those games as they were outscored 14-3.
With deGrom struggling of late, the onus is on the Mets offense to provide some run support tonight. After getting blanked 1-0 in their previous two games, the Mets’ offense finally broke through on Tuesday, scoring three runs against the Orioles. The Mets have been atrocious at the plate this season, hitting just .236 (22nd in the majors) this year. Their slugging percentage of .351 is fifth-worst in the majors this campaign.
The total has gone under in the Mets’ last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Baltimore (+105) wins, 6-3.
