Trevone Boykin (TCU)
It has been 77 years since a TCU player last won the Heisman Trophy. The path is clear, however, for Trevone Boykin to end that long drought this season and bring that coveted award back to Fort Worth. Boykin flourished in TCU’s new fast-paced, pass-heavy offense last campaign, setting single-season school records for touchdown passes (33), touchdowns responsible for (42), passing yards (3,901) and total offense (4,608).
[sc:NCAA240banner ]Even with those dazzling numbers, Boykin missed out on a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony last season after finishing a disappointing fourth in the voting process. He will take heart in the fact, however, that all three players who finished ahead of him last year are now plying their trade in the professional ranks. With virtually his entire offense (10 starters) returning this season, we can expect Boykin to continue posting monster numbers for TCU this year. He is the odds-on favorite at +500 to win the Heisman Trophy this season.
Ezekiel Elliott (Ohio State)
It has been five years since a non-quarterback last won the Heisman Trophy. If there’s one player, though, who’s more than capable of achieving that feat, it’s got to be Ohio State’s talented running back Ezekiel Elliott. He was simply unstoppable in the Buckeyes’ historic postseason run last year, rushing for 696 yards and eight touchdowns in Ohio State’s final three games.
He was phenomenal in the Buckeyes’ 42-20 destruction of the Oregon Ducks in the national championship, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries. With those numbers in mind, it isn’t far-fetched to see Elliott break the great Eddie George’s record for most yards rushing in a single season (1,927). Elliott was just 49 yards shy of the record last season but with his confidence at an all-time high, we can expect the 20-year-old to set more marks this year and put himself in contention for the coveted Heisman Trophy. He is pegged at +600 to win the award this season.
Cody Kessler (USC)
Another guy who’s expected to contend for the Heisman Trophy this year is Cody Kessler. The USC quarterback surpassed expectations last year with his excellent play for the Trojans last campaign. The fifth-year senior completed 69.7 percent of his throws last season, third-best in the entire FBS. His 167.06 quarterback rating was fourth-best in the entire nation as well. Kessler also made some history last season, tying Matt Barkley’s record of 39 touchdown passes which he set with USC back in 2011.
Many are expecting Kessler to break that incredible touchdown mark this year. If he pulls off that feat this season, chances are he will be in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony this coming December. He is listed at +1,000 to win the iconic award this season.
