Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (52-33)

Moneyline: +145

The Arizona Diamondbacks failed to gain ground in their race against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot of the NL West after losing another being shutout by the Dodgers this Wednesday, 1-0.

The D-backs, who rank fifth in the majors in runs scored and seventh in team batting average, are now 4.5 games behind Los Angeles in the division standings. Still, they can easily overcome this margin after the All-Star break.

Speaking of All-Star, Arizona’s breakout starter Robbie Ray (8-4, 3.06 ERA) will cap off the three-game set this Thursday. Ray earned his first-career All-Star nod thank to his strong mid-season performances. He’s gone 6-1 with a 1.81 ERA over his last eight starts in is also currently ranked third in the NL in strikeouts.

Then again, there’s no denying that the D-backs struggle whenever they play in Dodger Stadium, winning just four of 16 games against the Dodgers there since the 2016 season.

Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (57-29)

Moneyline: -160

Despite generating just one run on Wednesday, a masterful pitching performance by Alex Wood was more than enough for the Los Angeles Dodgers to secure their fifth win in six games.

Don’t count on the Dodgers to have another power outage anytime soon. They’re actually fourth in the majors in runs scored (443); one rank higher than the Diamondbacks.

But even if Los Angeles fails to revert to its high-scoring norm, the team has yet another standout starter on tap in Rich Hill (5-4, 4.00 ERA). Hill is hot off a no-run start against the Padres that saw him throw a career-tying 11 strikeouts. It was also the second-straight time that the 37-year-old lasted seven full innings of work after failing to hit that mark in his nine prior starts this year.

Above all else, the Dodgers have been virtually unbeatable with their fans in attendance, going an outstanding 17-3 over their last 20 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Dodgers (-160) create further separation between them and the D-backs in the division race with a 5-3 win.
