Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (31-27)
The Orioles returned to the losing column Thursday night, as they fell flat to the Washington Nationals, 6-1. It once again pushed back their drive to chase the Yankees for the division lead in the American League East.
Just like what it has been for most of the games this season, the batting was a big part of the problem in the loss. The Os only had four hits in 31 at-bats, and were struck out 15 times – five batters, including regular rotation guys Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, and Trey Mancini, were blanked.
Manny Machado sat out the game due to a strained wrist.
Dylan Bundy, meanwhile, will headline the team’s defense. The third-year hurler is 6-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 12 starts this season, and will be coming off a performance where he gave up two runs on four hits in five innings. The Yankees have collectively batted 17-for-59 against him all-time (.288).
Betting on the New York Yankees (38-21)
The Yankees dominated the Boston Red Sox in their last two games, with the score combining to be 17-1. The back-to-back Ws could be a sign that the team is poised to finally breakout again.
We may very well see the second notable resurgence from the Bronx Bombers this season. Following the pair of routs, they now have 17 homers and 52 runs in their last nine games. Matt Holliday, Aaron Hicks, and Didi Gregorius are among the headliners in the stretch, particularly this past week, as they are all hitting above .333 – Hicks is at .435.
And we haven’t even mentioned the other main batters of the Yanks – Aaron Judge, Starlin Castro, or even Gary Sanchez, who will be coming off a two-homer, five-RBI performance.
Jeff Montgomery (3-4, 3.67 ERA) is next in line for the pitching duties. This will be his third start against the Orioles. Combining the numbers in the previous two, he has thrown for 9.1 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits and five walks, along with 12 Ks.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees (-140) make it three in a row, 6-4.
