Betting on the Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore’s pitching duties for Friday will be opened by Yovani Gallardo (5-8, 5.63 ERA). The nine-year veteran’s most recent start was Saturday in Arizona, where he gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out five. The Orioles won, 3-2, but Gallardo wasn’t able to factor in the decision.
This upcoming Yankees game will be the start of the Orioles’ last regular season series for the year. The O’s should be feeling good entering the contest, as they are winners of five of their last six and fresh off a big 4-0 victory against co-wildcard spot contender Toronto Blue Jays. With the win, the two clubs are now deadlocked into an 87-72 record, topping the wildcard standings.
In facing the Yanks’ SP Michael Pineda, the Orioles will expect CF Adam Jones, RF Manny Machado, and SS J.J. Hardy to continue their productivity opposite the pitcher. The trio is collectively having efficient at-bats versus Pineda (25-of-64, 11 RBIs, 4 homers, .390).
Baltimore is 6-4 in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the New York Yankees
The Yankees closed the page on their rivalry with David Ortiz in way they surely loved: a sweep. The 5-1 win didn’t do much for the Yanks’ playoff chances (they are 4 games behind the wildcard spot), but it was a good spoiler for Ortiz’s last game at Yankee Stadium. Speaking of spoiler, the Yankees will again try to play one against the current playoff-bound Baltimore Orioles.
Like the O’s, the Yankees should also feel some momentum coming in. They have won four straight games and have scored five or more points in each of those outings.
Michael Pineda (6-11, 4.68 ERA) will be tapped to start this Friday. The 27-year-old, as evident in his W-L record and ERA, is having a rough year, but he hopes he can somehow finish the season with much respectable numbers. Pineda’s last two games (Rays and Blue Jays) had him gave up only one earned run over 11 innings.
New York’s batters, as a whole, are only at the .276 batting mark versus Gallardo, but five of them are above .300 (Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Chase Headley, Gary Sanchez, and Mark Texiera). Those five guys are projected to trigger the team’s offensive attack.
The Yankees are 6-4 in their last 10 home games with Pineda as the SP.
Writer’s Prediction
Baltimore wins, 6-5.
