Betting on the Chicago Bears (+5.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-3
The Bears just keep on getting exposed as a playoff pretender rather than a contender, as they took another loss last Sunday at the hands of the New Orleans Saints at home. The 26-23 loss to the Saints was Chicago’s second in a row and third in five games. However, the Bears managed to cover the spread as 5.5-point home underdogs, which was a testament to their uncanny ability to hang around against top competition. Nick Foles passed for 272 yards (28/41) and two touchdowns with an interception against the Saints, while kicker Cairo Santos made all three field-goal attempts, including the 51-yarder that sent the game overtime. The Bears will still continue to roll with Foles even though they are not getting the results they want, and probably they will in Week 9 against Tennessee, which just lost to a rookie quarterback. Tennessee’s pass defense has been faulty this season and it’s been worse of late. On the season, Tennessee is allowing 268.7 passing yards per game, but has upped that to 279.0 over its last three games.
The Bears are 3-1 against the spread in their last four games overall.
Betting on the Tennessee Titans (-5.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-2
The Titans are suddenly slipping. In what looked like a very winnable game against the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, the Titans got dealt with a 31-20 loss on the road. Tennessee failed to capitalize on the Bengals’ offensive line that featured a bunch of backups, as the Titans could not even generate a single sack. What remained the same for the Titans in that game was the dominance of running back Derrick Henry, who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Henry is going to next face Chicago’s defense that is not that great in stopping the run. The Bears are only 16th in the league with 120.0 rushing yards allowed per game and 15th with 4.3 yards given up per carry. On the season, Henry has 775 rushing yards (first in the NFL) and eight touchdowns (tied for second). But the Titans will have to be more creative on offense, especially since the Bears are great at stopping opponents on third downs. That’s pressure on quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who passed for 233 yards and two touchdowns with an interception on 18-of-30 completions in the loss to the Bengals. Corey Davis paced the team in that game with 128 receiving yards and a touchdown on eight catches.
The Titans are 6-4-1 against the spread in their last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
The Bears win, 24-21.
