Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies (8:40 PM ET)
Line: Pittsburgh Pirates (+135) vs. Colorado Rockies (-135) – total: 11.5 – view all MLB lines
The red-hot Rockies will enter as winners of four straight and averaging 12.2 runs per game in that span. They will be an easy pick if not for their suspect defense and starting pitcher. Although Jeff Hoffman is 6-1, he only has a 4.33 ERA in 11 appearances on the season. Colorado has also lost in three of his last five starts.
The same scenario can be said against the streaking Pirates. It’s good that they are riding a five-game winning streak, but with projected starter Trevor Williams only posting a 3-4 record and a 4.69 ERA, he’s going to be wrecked at Coors Field, a hit and homer magnet.
Pittsburgh leads the season series, 2-1.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rockies (-135) win, 8-5.
Houston Astros vs. Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)
Line: Houston Astros (-138) vs. Baltimore Orioles (+128) – total: 11.0 – view all MLB lines
The American League-leading Astros are on a funk, as they have been alternating wins and losses for six straight games. Projected starter Mike Fiers (6-4, 3.75 ERA) will be hoping to return the team into the right rhythm, since he’s been killing it lately. He has 24 strikeouts in his last 17 innings, and has only allowed five runs in that span.
The mediocre Orioles, meanwhile, are suddenly booming. They have won four consecutive games, while also scoring 10.3 runs per game in their last three – Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop are batting above .375 in the past week.
Extending the streak, though, will look bleak once you see that starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is only 4-5 with an ugly 7.01 ERA this season. Also, Houston has won all three meetings this season.
Writer’s Prediction
The Astros (-138) win, 6-4.
