[sc:MultiSportArticles ]New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners (10:10 PM ET)
Line: New York Yankees (+145) at Seattle Mariners (-160); total 6.5 – view these lines
A heated pitching duel is on the cards in the American League. Michael Pineda (6-2, 3.36 ERA) takes the mound tonight against his old team, the Seattle Mariners. He’s one of the better pitchers when it comes to strikeouts with 9.37 K/9, sixth in the AL. But Pineda hasn’t been as dominant on the road, allowing 13 earned runs over 25.1 innings (4.62 ERA) in four starts. The Yankees are on a five-game win streak in Safeco Field since 2013.
[sc:MLB240banner ]The Mariners’ King Felix Hernandez is also sharp pitcher. His 9.04 K/9 has translated to a league-best .889 win percentage. Hernandez hasn’t been that sharp in his last two outings at home, though, allowing six earned runs in 13 innings against Boston and Oakland. He surrendered a total of four home runs in those games, so he’ll have to be extra careful against a couple of Bronx Bombers. Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira have hit two and five homers respectively in their careers against Hernandez.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees (+145) win their sixth straight in Seattle.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants (10:15 PM ET)
Line: Pittsburgh Pirates (-130) at San Francisco Giants (+120); total 6.5 – view these lines
The defending World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, are rolling right now. The Giants won a majors-best 21 games in May. They scored a National League-best 148 runs in May. Brandon Crawford (23 RBIs), Brandon Belt (seven homers, 13 doubles and 17 RBIs) and Buster Posey (five homers and 17 RBIS) sizzled at the plate in the Giants’ excellent month. The three have hit a combined 4-of-16 with a double, a homer and three RBIs against Pittsburgh starter Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.11 ERA) in their respective careers.
The Pirates can fight fire with fire if Cole can’t cool down the red hot Giants. Former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen is batting .378 with five homers and 17 RBIs over his last 23 games. But he’s hit just 3 of 14 in his career against San Francisco’s Ryan Vogelsong (4-2, 4.24 ERA). The San Francisco right-hander has won four straight starts heading into tonight’s matchup.
Writer’s Prediction
The Giants (+120) take this home opener.
