The Pittsburgh Pirates (54-39) suffered their fourth loss in five games post-All-Star break after falling 3-1 to the Kansas City Royals yesterday. The Buccos will look to stop the bleeding tonight as veteran right-hander Charlie Morton (6-3, 4.34 ERA) gets the start. Morton has gone six innings in all of his last four starts, but has given up 13 total earned runs.
[sc:MLB240banner ]The AL-leading Royals (56-36) will counter with Edinson Volquez (8-5, 3.28 ERA), who has been the rotation’s most reliable starter this season. Volquez leads the team in innings pitched (112.1) as well as quality starts (nine in 19 starts). He’s gone 16.2 innings in his last three starts, and has given up just four earned runs.
Writer’s Prediction
The Royals roll to a 4-3 win.
Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:00 PM ET)
No Mike Trout, no problem. The Los Angeles Angels soared to their sixth win in a row with a 7-0 thrashing of the Minnesota Twins even without the AL MVP in the lineup. Trout is still questionable to play in tonight’s game due to a troublesome heel, but CJ Wilson is all set to start. The lefty threw eight shutout innings in his last start, a 1-0 win over Boston on July 17. Wilson (7-7, 3.59 ERA) has a 2.61 ERA through three starts this month.
Meanwhile, the Twins will look to break a three-game losing skid with Mike Pelfrey (5-6, 4.00 ERA) on the mound. Pelfrey lost his fourth-straight decision last time out against the Tigers, as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings. In the two starts prior, he lasted just 6.0 innings while giving up 11 runs and 16 hits.
