Betting on the Buffalo Bills (odds)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
The Bills opened up their preseason campaign with a close 16-15 win on the road against the Detroit Lions last Saturday. The star of that game for Buffalo was running back Devin Singletary who finished with 42 yards on eight carries. He also had a catch for a touchdown. Davis Webb looked fine on the field, passing for 90 yards and the TD toss to Singletary on 11-of-16 completions. It’s not sure whether Josh Allen will see action in Week 2 against Chicago, but the Bills don’t need to see him anyway, with him locked in for the starting role in the regular season. There would be more focus for the Bills on their defense that got great performances in Week 1 from the defensive line, particularly Greg Rousseau and Efe Obada. Buffalo was not able to force a turnover against Detroit, but the Lions came up empty in three trips to the end zone.
The Bills are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 preseason games. The total has hit over seven times in those contests.
Betting on the Chicago Bears (odds)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
Justin Fields saved the day for the Bears last Saturday. After an atrocious first half by Chicago’s offense, the rookie out of Ohio State entered the game and injected life into the team’s attack. Fields finished with 142 passing yards and a touchdown on 14-of-20 completions and also rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown on five carries to lead Chicago to a 20-13 win. Andy Dalton is still expected to start Week 1 of the regular season for the Bears, but if Fields keeps on having the kind of performance he had against the Dolphins, it will get harder to imagine that Dalton will have that role for long. The Bills will be prepared for Fields, but the Bears also still have a solid defense to fall back on. The Bears recorded three sacks and an interception against Miami and also did not allow a single point in the entire second half.
The Bears are 2-1 against the spread in their last three preseason games. The under is 5-4-1 in the Bears’ last 10 preseason games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
The Bears win, 19-16.
