Regular Season Record: 0-0
Josh Allen just got the contract extension he was looking for, but for Buffalo preseason games, it’s going to be Mitchell Trubisky, Jake Fromm, and Davis Webb who are likely to see more action under center. Trubisky is the more recognizable name among three, having spent time as a starter for the Chicago Bears in the last four years. Now, he is looking to solidify his role as the main backup to Allen. The Bills are also looking for better production in the coming season from their tight ends, particularly Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney. The Bills are projected to have one of the top offenses in the NFL this year, while their defense should take a step forward after getting a boost from the 2021 NFL Draft. The Bills spent their first two picks on defensive pieces in rookies Gregory Rousseau and Carlos Basham.
The Bills, who averaged 29.9 points per game last season, are 5-0 against the spread in their last five preseason games.
Betting on the Detroit Lions (+2)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Lions are entering a new era. After over a decade with Matthew Stafford as their starter under center, the Lions will be introducing Jared Goff this season as the main man on the offense. Just don’t expect to see much of him this coming Friday. Instead, it’s going to be Tim Boyle and David Blough who should be splitting quarterbacking duties for Detroit’s offense that finished just 20th in the NFL in 2020 with 23.6 points per game. A porous offensive line contributed to the hardships of Detroit’s attack in 2020, so the Lions took OT Penei Sewell in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft to help address the issue. Sewell, aside, the Lions are also keeping an eye on the other rookies on defense like DT Levi Onwuzurike, DT Alim McNeill, and CB Ifeatu Melifonwu. Detroit was last in the league a season ago in scoring defense (32.4 points allowed per game) and total defense (419.8 total yards surrendered per contest).
The over is 3-0 in the Lions’ last three preseason games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Bills win, 21-13.
