Betting on the California Golden Bears (8-21)
California is one of the most underwhelming major conference teams in the nation. It’s been wallowing in the bottom of the Pac-12 standings for most of the season, no thanks to the Bears’ troubles at both ends of the floor. The team is averaging just 68.9 points per game, and is barely doing anything to alleviate that on defense. The Bears are allowing 77.2 points per contest with opponents knocking down 47 percent of their shots. While it seems that the Bears are on their way to losing another game to Arizona this Saturday, they could take advantage of a probably deflated Wildcats squad that is in the middle of a turmoil with regards to corruption. The Wildcats will not have head coach Sean Miller, who remains away from the team, plus the Wildcats won’t have second-leading scorer Allonzo Trier due to suspension. Trier scored 15 points when the Wildcats handed California a 79-58 loss on Jan. 17.
California is 4-2 ATS in its last six road games versus Arizona.
Betting on the Arizona Wildcats (22-7)
With or without Sean Miller and Allonzo Trier, the Wildcats are still a force to reckon with so long as they have man-child Deandre Ayton on their active roster. Ayton wreaked havoc in the win over California, scoring 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field to go with 11 rebounds and two blocks. As of this writing, the potential No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA Draft is posting averages of 19.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. The Wildcats also have plenty of scorers to soften the impact of Trier’s loss. Dusan Ristic, for one, is averaging 11.8 points per game. He had 10 in the California game. The Wildcats are averaging 81.8 points per game and are making 51.2 percent of their shots from the field. Plus if there’s one game Arizona could weather the absences of some of its key figures, it’s this game against a going-nowhere Bears team. The Wildcats are 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS in their last 10 games overall against California.
Writer’s Prediction
Arizona prevails with a huge 81-69 win.
