Offensive Edge – Germany (-175)

2016-Summer-Olympics---News-Banners-250x130-V1

Despite needing a late 88th minute equalizer to salvage a 2-2 draw against Australia, Germany’s offense remains pretty formidable. After thoroughly dominating Zimbabwe 6-1 (with 77 percent possession and 39 shots) in their first group match, the Germans controlled 64 percent of possession against the Matildas and outshot them, 26-15.

With the way the Germans have been dominating the ball and creating so many chances through their first two games, they should still have the edge in attack against Canada.

The Canadians have been right up there with the Germans through two games, though. Janine Beckie and Christine Sinclair have been simply amazing to start the tournament. The two have scored all five of the team’s goals thus far, including three in 35 minutes to beat Zimbabwe, 3-1.

The Germans will be favored to control the lion’s share of the possession once again, but with two clinical forwards in such fine form, don’t discount the Canadians from grabbing a goal or two.

Defensive Edge – Canada (+340)

The Germans’ attack has been their best form of defense in this tournament, as their constant possession has aided their backline. The fact that they were 2-1 down despite outplaying Australia shouldn’t be too much of a concern, especially if they can continue to boss the game to the degree they’ve been doing.

However, it’s hard to overlook the work the Canadians have done so far defensively. They were a woman down for over 70 minutes against Australia, but were still able to keep a clean sheet. They followed up that impressive feat with a very efficient performance against Zimbabwe. The Canadians allowed just one shot on target (a goal), which came when the game was already decided.

Writer’s Prediction: Canada needs only a draw to ensure top spot in Group F, and it successfully gets that point. Canada and Germany play out a 1-1 draw (+305).
