By trading Christian McCaffrey, the Carolina Panthers made their intentions clear: that they are looking at their future more than they are interested in winning this season. Then again, they actually won a game in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 21-3. What is going on? Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons are coming off a 35-17 road loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday and will look to rebound strongly when they host the Panthers. Regular Season Record: 2-5
Still without Sam Darnold and also without Baker Mayfield, the Panthers turned to third-string quarterback PJ Walker in Week 7. He delivered more than what even the Panthers expected of him, as he passed for 177 yards and two touchdowns without an interception on 16/22 completions against the Buccaneers. He actually outplayed Tom Brady and might still be smiling ear to ear as you read this. Walker could get another nod to start in Week 8 against the Falcons and his performance and the Panthers’ win in the Atlanta game are great sources of confidence for him. Also don’t forget about the pair of D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard, who rushed for a combined 181 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in Week 7.
The Under is 5-1 in the Panthers’ last six games.
Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (-6.0)
Regular Season Record: 3-4
The Falcons could not stop the Bengals’ offense led by Joe Burrow in Week 7. Burrow had 501 total yards from scrimmage. He also passed for four touchdowns and ran for another. However, Burrow is heads and shoulders above any of the quarterbacks the Panthers have right now, so the Falcons should have an easier time on defense in Week 8 than they did last Sunday. Marcus Mariota is also not playing badly at all, and his dual-threat ability could throw off Carolina’s defense. Atlanta entered Week 7 ranked third in the league with 165.2 rushing yards per game and fourth with 1.3 rushing scores per contest.
The Falcons are 6-3-1 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
The Falcons win, 27-20.
