NFL News and Previews

Betting on the Carolina Panthers (1-1)

Point Spread: PICK

The Panthers were once again without starting quarterback Cam Newton and second-round rookie receiver Curtis Samuel in Week 2’s 34-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans. But despite that defeat, the Panthers have to be impressed with what they saw from their running backs.

Cameron Artis-Payne had a strong game with 70 yards in five carries with a touchdown. Meanwhile, rookie running back Christian McCaffrey had another impressive outing as he had 72 yards from scrimmage on five touches, including a 17-yard rushing score.

It remains to be seen whether Samuel, who’s still recovering from a hamstring injury, and Newton will be able to make their preseason debuts against the Jags. But if they do, it should only help a promising Panthers offense that has scored 27 points in each of their first two preseason games.

Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1)

Point Spread: PICK

Blake Bortles is now playing for his starting quarterback job as his poor play this preseason has sent him spiraling down a full-blown quarterback battle. The fourth-year pro had another disastrous outing in the Jags’ 12-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished 8-of-13 for 65 yards, and made some pretty awful throws that have opened the door for backup Chad Henne to possibly take his job.

Even Brandon Allen has been impressing much more than Bortles. Allen has gone 15-of-22 for 229 yards in preseason and has thrown a touchdown in each of those games.

However, Leonard Fournette has been ruled out for the game and won’t get to go head-to-head with fellow rookie McCaffrey. Corner A.J. Bouye, receiver Marquis Lee, and tight end Mychal Rivera also won’t feature for the Jags. But the absence of Lee and Rivera should be good news for rookie receiver Dede Westbrook, who figures to get more targets after exploding for 131 yards on six catches against the Bucs.

Writer’s Prediction

The Panthers (PICK) inflict more misery on the Jags as they get the road win.
