Betting on the Chicago Cubs (0-1)
Revenge is on the minds of the reigning World Series champions after dropping their first game of the season in Sunday’s series opener, where the Cardinals escaped with a 4-3 win.
Climbing the mound for the Cubs is Jake Arrieta, who was 18-8 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 31 starts in 2016. He also struck out 190 batters during that stretch, and carried a 3-1 record with a 2.38 ERA in four starts against St. Louis in the same year.
On offense, Chicago hopes to get it going early, unlike in the first game where it scored all of its runs in the ninth inning thanks to a Willson Contreras dinger. He, along with Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell, should have a solid performance against the Cards’ scheduled starter in Adam Wainwright.
Contreras, Rizzo and Russell are batting no lower than .306 all-time against the right-handed veteran.
Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (1-0)
It must have been awesome for Dexter Fowler to get the better of his former team—the Cubs—in Sunday’s season opener. He went 1-of-4 at the plate in his Cardinals debut, and is hoping to see his side come out on top again in this second meeting.
That won’t be easy with Jake Arrieta starting for Chicago, which is looking to avoid an unprecedented 0-2 start to the new season, but St. Louis has some hitters who can make it tough on the former Cy Young Award winner: Matt Adams and Randal Grichuk.
Adams is hitting .318 lifetime against Arrieta, while Grichuk is batting .333 with three runs-batted-in and one homer in the same matchup. He also slugged in the walk-off single to secure the win for the Cards in Sunday’s opener.
Meanwhile, Adam Wainwright will start for this game, looking to bounce back from what was his worst campaign in 2016, when he finished with 13-9 record and a 4.62 ERA.
Writer’s Prediction
