Betting on the Chicago White Sox (24-31)

Moneyline: +145

Yet another frustrating loss fell in the hands of the White Sox, who are now tied for the second-worst record in the American League. Sunday’s 7-4 defeat to the Detroit Tigers was their fifth in a row, and as usual, it’s their poor defense that’s letting them down.

The White Sox’s awful pitching and fielding in the past week have resulted in allowing an average of three homers, 13.2 hits, and 9.8 runs per game in their last five outings, which had them compiling a 10.32 ERA.

It doesn’t appear that we’re going to see an improvement this Tuesday, with probable starter Jose Quintana having his worst start to a season. The lefty is only 2-7 with a 5.60 ERA in 11 starts this year, and he has been blasted for 18 hits and 15 earned runs in his last seven innings.

The mess continues on offense, but only to Jose Abreu, as he can only muster two hits in his last 23 at-bats. Other key batters Avisail Garcia, Leury Garcia, Melky Cabrera, and Tim Anderson are doing decent (all are hitting .292 or better), particularly Leury, who’s 9-for-22 with four RBIs in his last six.

Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (29-30)

Moneyline: -160

The Rays are stinking it up as of late too. They have dropped four of their last five games, and in each of those losses, they have allowed 11 or more hits and seven or more runs.

Unlike the White Sox, though, the Rays are being horrid on both sides of the field. In the recent three-game sweep from the Seattle Mariners, the pitching had an 8.63 ERA, while they also batted at an ugly rate of .192 (19-for-104, struck out 30 times).

Still, Tampa has a handful of dangerous guys that can suddenly go off – the explosive Evan Longoria, current number two hitter in the league, Corey Dickerson, and Logan Morrison, who’s tied for third in the league in homers (16) – so the group could warrant some respect despite the slump.

Projected starting pitcher Chris Archer, who’s 4-3 with a 4.93 ERA on the season, should be in the same boat. He has given up 32 hits and 19 runs in his last six starts, but in the same stretch, he has also tallied double-digit Ks four times.

Writer’s Prediction

The Rays (+145) should take this one, 6-2. The White Sox are simply much messier.
