Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-17)
Adrenaline must still be oozing for the Tigers after winning what was instantly the frontrunner candidate for game of the year, beating then No. 3 Louisville, 42-36 last Saturday.
While the Tigers play on a shorter break than normal, they will be matched up against a softer opponent in Boston College, which they have defeated in the last five meetings, a stretch that dates back to 2011.
Last season, Clemson beat the Eagles, 34-17, in a game that saw Deshaun Watson go on a tear, passing for 420 yards with three touchdowns (and two picks) and running for 32 more yards with a score. Much better and with more experience this season, Watson could lay a nastier waste on the Eagles this Friday. Watson had three interceptions against Louisville, but that’s entirely forgivable as he passed for 306 yards with five touchdowns, while adding 91 yards more on the ground.
Watson is barely the only weapon the Tigers have. Take for example Wayne Gallman, who leads the team with 366 rushing yards and four rushing TD’s. Mike Williams, meanwhile, is Watson’s favorite target downfield, as the wide receiver tops Clemson with 373 receiving yards to go with a pair of touchdowns.
Betting on the Boston College Eagles (+17)
The Eagles are bracing themselves with a heavy hitting program coming to Chestnut Hill this week. If anything, back-to-back landslide wins over Wagner and Buffalo, has Boston College lying in a bed of confidence heading into the showdown with Dabo Swinney’s boys.
While the Eagles know they’re the big underdogs in this match as their previous wins were merely against lightweights, beating (or at least covering the spread) Clemson isn’t entirely a product of fantasy. But if the Eagles were to beat Clemson, their defense has to be at its tightest. The Eagles will parade a run defense that is second in the ACC with only 78.0 rushing yards allowed per game. Against Buffalo, the Eagles limited the Bulls to only 26 rushing yards.
On offense , there’ll be a ton of pressure on quarterback Patrick Towles to deliver. Towles was solid versus the Bulls, passing for 234 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He did have two lost fumbles, though, so he’d have to be extra careful this Friday against Clemson’s tough D.
Boston College is 6-1 in its last seven games when it was an underdog by at least eight points.
