Betting on the Cleveland Browns (+6)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
It’s unusual to see the Browns enter the season with so much swag and promise, but that’s been the case of late for Cleveland. Kevin Stefanski has transformed this talented Browns into a legitimate threat since he took over the head-coaching job in 2020. Baker Mayfield leads the attack of Cleveland, which has the best 1-2 running back tandem in the league. Nick Chubb is the RB1 while RB2 Kareem Hunt is arguably better than most RB1s in the NFL. Then there’s Odell Beckham Jr. returning to action after dealing with an injury. Meanwhile, Cleveland upgraded its defense by signing Jadeveon Clowney. Myles Garrett and Clowney form a scary pass-rush duo that will be haunting Patrick Mahomes in Week 1. The Browns were not able to get to Mahomes in their 22-17 loss to Kansas City in last season’s AFC Divisional Round matchup. That could change this time.
The Browns are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games as the road underdog.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-6)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Kansas City is not a perfect team. But it has Patrick Mahomes, and a lot of times, having the best quarterback in football is enough to cover multiple problems of a team. Mahomes is coming off a season in which he led the Chiefs to another Super Bowl appearance. In 2020, he had 4,740 passing yards and 38 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He also added 308 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Browns have an immense offense, but the Chiefs have enough to survive a firefight against Bake Mayfield and company. The Chiefs don’t only have Mahomes, but they also control arguably the best tight end in the league in Travis Kelce. As long as Mahomes is running the show, let alone having a deep receiving corps that also has Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, and Sammy Watkins, the Chiefs will be a handful for the Browns — and the rest of the league.
The Chiefs are 12-2 against the spread in their last 14 games in the month of September.
Writer’s Prediction
The Browns win, 27-24.
