Betting on the Cleveland Indians (+133)

Some guy who goes by the name of Ryan Merritt will start for the Indians later today. It’s alright if you’re completely unaware who Merritt is, as he’s made just three appearances this season—all as a reliever—carrying a 1.50 ERA and 0.50 WHIP in just 6.0 total innings pitched.

With such an unproven starter tonight, Cleveland’s bats will have to come through early. The Indians are expecting some action at the plate coming from the likes of Carlos Santana and Jose Ramirez, who have been two of the hottest hitters of late for Cleveland. Santana is 9-for-25 with three doubles and six RBIs over the last seven games. Ramirez, meanwhile, is 5-for-23 with three doubles in his past six contests.

Cleveland will also be up against a lefty in Daniel Norris, who had already beaten the Tribe this season.

The Indians are 8-2 in their last 10 games at Comerica Park dating back to last season.

Betting on the Detroit Tigers (-143)

Detroit is still in the hunt for a wild card spot in the American League so expect the Tigers to come focused into today’s series opener against the Indians.

On the mound for them is Daniel Norris, has been fantastic for the Tigers since late August. Norris picked up a no decision in his last start, but allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out six in 5.2 frames of a 7-4 loss to Kansas City on September 24. It was the fifth time in six starts since August 25 that Norris has limited opponents to three runs or fewer.

That stretch includes the Tigers’ 3-2 road win over Cleveland in which Norris gave up just one earned run on five hits while fanning out six in five innings of mound action.

As for the offense, the Tigers are relying on their solid hitting against southpaws to show up against Cleveland starter Merritt. The Tigers are hitting .260 against lefties this season.

The Tigers are 5-4 in Norris’ last nine home starts.

Writer’s Prediction

Detroit (-143) wins, 5-3.
