Betting on the Columbus Blue Jackets

A new head coach in John Tortorella didn’t change the results for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are still winless after a 3-2 defeat against the Minnesota Wild Thursday night. They had a chance to win the game but ultimately failed to overcome late rally led by the Nino Niederreiter and Thomas Vanek. That loss drops the Blue Jackets 0-8-0 on the season, the worst start in the NHL since 1943-44 Rangers.

[sc:NHL240 ]Defense, defense and defense remains to be their biggest waterloo. The Blue Jackets have been outscored 37-15 and are surrendering a league-high 4.63 goals per contest. A testament to this is the pair of net minders, Sergei Bobrovsky and Curtis McElhinney, who have allowed a combined 30 goals throughout their first eight games this season.

However, the Blue Jackets should a little optimistic about their next matchup against a Colorado Avalanche team that has only managed to a single point in their previous two contests which both resulted to losses.

The offense, meanwhile, will likely be led by veteran left-winger Brandon Saad. Saad boasts a team-high three goals and has had some success opposite the Avalanche throughout five years in the league with four goals and five assists across his name.

Columbus is 2-3 SU and 3-2 OU in its previous five games with the Avalanche.

Betting on the Colorado Avalanche

Semyon Varlamov

The losing woes continue for the Colorado Avalanche after a tough 1-0 overtime defeat to the Hurricanes on Wednesday night. They were held scoreless for the first time this season as all of their 26 shot attempts were negated by Cam Ward. The Avalanche are now on a two-game skid and are at the bottom of the Central Division.

It’s worth noting, though, that Semyon Varlamov, who returned to the net after backup Reto Barra played the past two games, was much sharper against Carolina, stopping 18 of 19 shot attempts. He’ll definitely look to keep this form up in their next contest while carrying a 1-2-1 record with a 3.89 GAA and .861 save percentage thus far this season.

Speaking of their next contest, the Avalanche ought to feel really confident about going up against a struggling and winless Columbus Blue Jackets team. That said, look to Gabriel Landeskog and John Mitchell to provide the much-needed goals in this one.

Landeskog leads the team with six points and four goals and has had a respectable track record when opposing the Blue Jackets with 10 points (seven goals and three assists) to his name. Mitchell, on the other hand, has scored all of his four goals this year at Pepsi Center.

Colorado is 6-4 SU and 4-4-2 OU in its past 10 home games.
