Betting on D.C. United
D.C. United have bounced back well after falling to the Seattle Sounders at home in their first game back from the two-week World Cup break. United won both away games at Toronto and San Jose, 2-1, extending their road winning streak to three games.
[sc:Soccer240banner ]United now set their sights toward translating that good road record to their home form. They’re winless in their last two at RFK Stadium, and have been shut out on both occasions.
Leading goalscorer, striker Fabian Espindola (seven goals), has been held scoreless in the team’s last five games. In case their talisman continues his barren run, midfielders Nick de Leon and Luis Silva (five goals combined in their last four games) will need to add some needed firepower.
While United’s offense has been sputtering, their defense is still sturdy as ever. Ranked fourth in the MLS in goals conceded with just 19, United have kept clean sheets in three of their last four home games.
Betting on Chivas USA
After a truly horrific first three months of the season which saw them claim just two wins in their first 14 games, Chivas USA have turned their season around. Since returning from the World Cup break, the Rojiblancos have reeled off four straight wins to get back in the race for a Western Conference playoff berth.
Chivas owe much of their resurgence to the spectacular goalscoring form of striker Erick Torres. The 21-year old known as “Cubo” is on a five-game scoring spree, upping his season total to 13 goals, third in the MLS scoring charts.
Cubo should continue getting quality looks on goal against DC United with the likes of Mauro Rosales setting him up. Rosales had a hand in all three of Chivas’ goals in their 3-1 win over Vancouver on July 12. His eight assists this season are the second-most in the league.
But an even bigger development has been the improvement of their previously porous backline. After conceding at least a goal in all of their first 14 games, they’ve now kept a clean sheet in three of the last four.
Writer’s Prediction
Cubo’s scoring run comes to an end, and so does Chivas’ winning run. Expect a very tight affair as both teams’ defenses cancel each other’s offenses out, with the game ending in a scoreless draw.
