Betting on the Detroit Tigers (+150)
Detroit’s losing woes continued on Wednesday as it suffered a gut-wrenching 3-2 defeat to the Washington Nationals in their series finale. The Tigers had no answer for Max Scherzer who tied an MLB record with 20 strikeouts. It was another disappointing defeat for the Tigers who have now lost eight of their last nine games.
With the Tigers struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Mike Pelfrey (0-4, 6.23 ERA) to deliver a solid start for Detroit tonight. The problem for the Tigers is that Pelfrey has also gone off the rails of late. He has yielded five earned runs in each of his last three starts. He has already surrendered six home runs this campaign after serving up just 11 over 30 starts for the Minnesota Twins last season.
With Pelfrey still a big question mark at this point, the onus is on the Detroit hitters to provide some much-needed runs tonight. Expected to lead the Tigers’ offense in the series opener against the Red Sox are J.D. Martinez and Jose Iglesias. They both homered Wednesday against the excellent Max Scherzer. Martinez and Iglesias both hit long balls as well off Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez last season. Another guy who’s primed to have a big outing tonight is Miguel Cabrera. The first baseman is a lifetime .349 hitter against Jimenez.
The Tigers are 4-6 in their last 10 road games. They are pegged at +1,500 to win the American League pennant.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (-170)
The Baltimore Orioles stretched their unbeaten run to four games with a resounding 9-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Mark Trumbo homered twice for the Orioles who became the 15th team in major league history to hit back-to-back home runs in three straight games. The Orioles will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Detroit Tigers later tonight.
Pitching for the Orioles in the series opener is right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (2-3, 4.54 ERA). He was superb in his last start for the Orioles, allowing just two runs on nine hits in eight innings of action in Baltimore’s 5-2 win against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday night. It was a huge bounce-back performance by Jimenez who allowed six runs over 4.2 innings in his previous outing.
Jimenez can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Orioles’ offense to pick up the scoring slack as well. Expected to lead the Baltimore lineup tonight are Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo. The Orioles’ 3-4-5 hitters went 10 for 15 with four homers, nine RBIs and seven runs scored in Wednesday’s win against Minnesota. The Orioles have belted 12 homers in the last three games.
The Orioles are 6-4 in their last 10 home games. They are priced at +1,800 to win the World Series this year.
