Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (0-2)
To say that Florida State’s start this 2017 campaign has been disappointing would be a severe understatement. The Seminoles have started the season cold, losing to Alabama and NC State in their first two outings. They’re dead-last in the ACC in rushing (72 yards per game), scoring (14 points per game) and total offense (316 yards per game). Injuries have crippled their once strong lineup, losing quarterback Deondre Francois for the season in the Alabama game and receiver Auden Tate and linebacker Matthew Thomas in the NC State game.
That being said, the Seminoles are still overwhelming favorites to win against the unbeaten Demon Deacons this coming Saturday. Jumbo Fisher’s men have fared extremely well against Wake Forest of late, winning their last five meetings by an average of 34 points. All eyes will once again be on quarterback James Blackman who made history against NC State by becoming the first true freshman to start for FSU since 1985.
He looked composed in that contest, completing 22 of 38 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown. One thing Blackman must address, though, in his next start against Wake Forest is his execution in the red zone. The Seminoles struggled to score touchdowns in the red zone against NC State, with just one in seven trips on Saturday.
Betting on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (4-0)
In a start clearly nobody saw coming, Wake Forest will enter ACC play with an unblemished 4-0 record. Yes, you read that right. The Demon Deacons preserved that unbeaten slate with a dramatic 20-19 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday. Scotty Washington blocked Michael Rubino’s 39-yard field goal attempt with five seconds remaining to send Wake Forest fans into a frenzy.
Those celebrations will pale in comparison, though, to the one they will stage if the Demon Deacons manage to upset the Seminoles this coming Saturday. Wake Forest sports a 6-28-1 record against Florida State with the Demon Deacons losing 21 of their last 25 games. The Seminoles are ripe for an upset though with injuries plaguing their squad as we speak. That’s music to the ears of the Demon Deacons who are looking to start 5-0 for the first time since 2006.
For that scenario to transpire, the Demon Deacons will need to get an excellent performance from John Wolford. He completed 14-of-27 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against the Mountaineers, adding 77 rushing yards on 13 carries. Through four matches, Wolford has thrown eight touchdowns and no interceptions.
