Betting on Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Not even Manny Pacquiao’s fists of fury could deter pound-for-pound great Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. from inching closer to a remarkable spotless professional record before retiring. Mayweather blew Pacquiao out of the water, winning a unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, 118-110) for a 48-0 record. He will attempt to tie Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0 before retiring when he takes on Andre Berto for what we can assume as the last fight of his career.

[sc:Other240banner ]Money is a slick tactician of the sweet science. Rarely would you see him blitz his way to victory, winging sloppy but powerful punches. Mayweather likes to stick and move, peppering his opponents with lightning quick jabs and straights. Not even one of the best pressure and volume punchers in Pacquiao could outland Mayweather; Money outlanded the Filipino 148-81 in total punches.

Mayweather isn’t just a slick puncher, he also has one of the best if not the best minds in the sport. His boxing IQ is off the charts, allowing him to read opponents and adjusting to their styles. While he prefers to fight off the back foot due to his excellent counter punching, Mayweather can also lead, as evidenced by his first fight against Marcos Maidana.

Maidana outlanded Mayweather in five of the first eight rounds of their first matchup in May 2014. Money found Maidana’s rhythm, calculated his next moves, then proceeded to outbox the Argentinian by a lopsided 83-59 in the final four rounds.

With his slick boxing style and ring genius, there’s little to no doubt that Mayweather will indeed retire undefeated.

Betting on Andre Berto

Andre Berto

Mayweather is a once in a lifetime talent in boxing. He has all the tools needed to retire undefeated. But approaching 40 years old and almost 50 matches should takes its toll in the fight game, which opens the possibility for an unlikely upset. Here’s where Andre Berto comes in.

Berto emerged from the 2004 Olympics ready to tear it up on the professional level. He quickly compiled an undefeated 27-0 (19 by knockout or technical knockout) record, capturing the NABF, IBF and WBC Welterweight Championships along the way. Berto also has plenty of power in his punches, as evidenced by his come-from-behind sixth-round stoppage of Josesito Lopez in March.

If Berto has any chance to win this fight, he’ll need to bully Mayweather inside the pocket to land ferocious punches. But he’s struggled to gain some traction recently; he’s just 3-3 in his last six fights, even losing by knockout to a journeyman in Jesus Soto Karass (28-10-3) in 2013.

Porous defense and swelling issues in his face go against Berto. While he won’t be facing a huge power puncher in Mayweather, his face may still end up battered and bruised by his opponent’s precision. Being very hittable may also give Mayweather a stoppage victory for the last fight of his career, a perfect story book ending for the one of the most egotistical boxers of this generation.

Writer’s Prediction

Many expect Mayweather (-3,500) to cruise to a unanimous decision. He proves them wrong with an eighth-round technical knockout of Berto. Create a betting account now and catch all the biggest boxing fights around the world.
